What does filing Form I-130 actually do for my relative?

By filing Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, you help your relative to obtain a visa category and move to the United States as a permanent resident.

The beneficiary – your spouse or child – will be added on the visa waiting list once USCIS approves your petition.

After approval of the petition, USCIS will send your petition to the National Visa Center (NVC). NVC will shortly contact your relative and ask to file additional documents and attend an interview.

Once the paperwork is completed, the beneficiary will obtain a visa category and will be allowed to the United States.
